Saucha: A Lesson in Purity, Letting Go, and Unexpected Gifts

Saucha is a Sanskrit term meaning “cleanliness,” “purity,” or “clarity.” It represents the first Niyama (observance) in Patanjali’s Eight-Limbed Path of Yoga. Recently, I experienced the power of Saucha in a very personal way.

Three weeks ago, I spent time deeply cleaning our old apartment before moving out. That living room was a special place; it was where my husband, my students, and I practiced yoga for many hours. I felt a deep sense of gratitude to that home for welcoming me since I first moved to Canada.

Then, a small miracle happened.

During COVID-19, I lost my wedding ring 💍. Eventually, my husband ordered a new one to replace it. On our very last day in the old apartment, while reaching for a plastic bag to pack the final few items, I heard a small sound.

It was my original ring! Now I have two wedding rings. My husband joked that since I have two rings, I must need a second husband!

This unexpected discovery felt like a gift for practicing Saucha—by clearing the old space, the lost was found. It reminded me of a lesson I’ve learned since moving to Canada: the importance of "letting go." When my husband asks what I want for my birthday 🎁, I always say "nothing." I already have everything I need, and I remember how difficult it was to declutter so many belongings before moving across the world.

However, for my last birthday, I did have one wish: I asked my husband to apply for a new apartment. At the end of January, we found out we got the very last available unit in a brand-new building in West Vancouver. We are so happy! We didn't overthink the result; I simply took action on what I truly wanted.

The final surprise? My official Iyengar Yoga Teacher certification finally arrived from India! My mentor, Deborah Peaks , presented it to me during her class. I am so deeply appreciative of her guidance, my husband’s constant support, and everyone who helped me reach this milestone.

I can’t wait to hang my certificate in our new home and continue this journey of practice and clarity.
